"Learning About Biographies"

 

Grade Level: 4th

Objective: 5.11. Students will define a biography as a true book about a person's life and know that biographies are arranged in alphabetical order by the person' last name.

Core Content for Assessment

RD-M-1.0.12 Identify characteristics of short stories, novels, poetry, and plays.

RD-M-1.0.13 Describe literary elements (e.g., characterization, setting, plot, theme, point of view) in a passage.

 

Resources:  filmstrips, the online videos "Literature for Children - Biographies"; "Davey Crockett", "Amelia Earhart", "Pocahontas", "Ben Franklin", biography books, and the Internet site Biographical Dictionary.

Lesson Plan:

    Week 1: Students will go over the CHAMP's expectations for the Library Media Center, view the video "Literature for Children - Biographies"  and the Library Media Specialist will explain where the Biography section is located and how Biography books are arranged. Students will be encouraged to check out biography books and some will be display. 

    Week 2: Students will view the video "Davey Crockett" and "Amelia Earhart" and will be introduced to the Biographical Dictionary web site. Students will be given time to access this web site in the computer lab.  Students will be encouraged to check out biography books.

    Week 3: The Library Media Specialist will booktalk some Biography books and read "Snowflake Bentley", by Jaqueline Briggs Martin. Students will be encouraged to check out biography books.

    Week 4: Students will view the online video "Ben Franklin, Part 1". Students will be encouraged to check out biography books.

  Week 5: Students will view the online video  and "Ben Franklin, Part 2". Students will be encouraged to check out biography books.

Assessment: Students will be assessed visually as they locate biographies in the library media center and orally as they discuss the objectives.
