"Learning About Fantasy"

 

Grade Level: 5th

Objectives:  5.2. Students will understand that fiction is made up of many different genres and choose a variety of books to read from the different genres.

Core Content:

RD-05-2.0.2

Students will identify or explain literary elements (e.g., characterization, setting, plot, theme, point of view) in a passage.

RD-05-2.0.1

Students will identify and describe the characteristics of fiction, nonfiction, poetry or plays.

Resources: the downloaded video, "Fantasy", the video "A Cricket in Times Square", and several Fantasy books.

Lesson Plan:

Week 1: Students will review the CHAMPs expectations for the Library Media Center and review the concept that there are many different kinds of books in the Library Media Center, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry and plays. Students will then check out the library books for the first time.

Week 2: Students will review the CHAMPs expectations for the Library Media Center, review the concept about many different types of books, then be introduced to the genre of Fantasy. Students will then view the downloaded video "Fantasy" and the Library Media Specialist will have Fantasy books on display for students to examine and check out.

Week 2: The Library Media Specialist will read some excerpts from some fantasy books and encourage students to check them out.

Week 3 and Week 4: Students will view the Fantasy video "A Cricket in Times Square".

Assessment: Students will be assessed visually as they locate fantasies in the Library Media Center.
