"Learning About Realistic Fiction"

Grade Level: 5th

Objective: 5.2 Students will understand that fiction is made up of many genres and will choose a variety of books to read from the different genres.

Context: Students have previously been introduced to Fantasy, another genre of Fiction, so they are familiar with genres.
Materials/Technology: downloaded video, Realistic Fiction, clips from "Thank You, Jackie Robinson" and "The Summer of the Swan", the book "The War with Grandpa", by Robert Smith and other realistic fiction books to display and booktalk
Procedures:

    Week 1: Students will review genres of fiction and be introduced to Realistic Fiction by viewing "Children's Literature: Realistic Fiction". The library media specialist will have realistic fiction books on display to check out.

    Week 2: Students will review Realistic Fiction and view a video clip from "Thank You, Jackie Robinson". They will then check out books.

    Week 3: Students will review Realistic Fiction and view a video clip from "The Summer of the Swan". They will then check out books.

    Week 4: Students will review Realistic Fiction and listen to part of the book "The War with Grandpa". They will then check out books.

Student Assessment: Students will be assessed holistically as they choose books from various genres to check out.
