"Fun with Chapter Books"

 

Grade Level: First Grade

Objective: 1.11. Students will choose and appreciate books which have several chapters and a table of contents.

Resources: various fiction books

Week #1: Core Content:

EL-P-SLO-S-6

Students will ask and respond to questions as a way to participate in class discussions.

I can respond to a question in class.

Lesson Plan:

Students will review Fiction books, where they are located in the Library Media Center, and using a table of contents. They will be introduced to choosing Fiction books to check out. Then they will listen to "Horrible Harry Goes to the Moon", by Suzy Kline.

 

Week #2: Core Content:

EL-P-RRT-U-3

Students will understand that reading a wide range of literature by different authors, and from many time periods, cultures, and genres, builds an understanding of the extent of human experience.

I can read fiction books by different authors.

Lesson Plan:

Students will discuss the fact that there are many different authors who write fiction books and will listen to "June B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business", by Barbara Park .

 

Week #3: Core Content:

EL-P-FF-S-3
 

Students will read grade-appropriate material – orally and silently - with accuracy and fluency.

I can read books which are appropriate for my reading level.

Lesson Plan:

Students will discuss how to choose books which are appropriate for their reading level and listen to "Ramona Quimby, the Brave", by Beverly Cleary .

Assessment: Students will be assessed visually as the choose books from the fiction section of the Library Media Center.
