"Reading Humorous Books"

Grade Level: 1st

Objective: 1.6. Students will learn about predicting and drawing conclusions when reading a book.

Context: Students have previously been introduced to picture books and fiction books and this unit will build on that knowledge.
Materials/Technology: various books and an downloaded video
Procedures:

Week #1: Students will be introduced to humorous books by viewing the video "Books Are Boring". They will then choose and check out their library books.

Weeks #2, 3 and 4: Students will listen to the book "Freckle Juice", by Judy Blume. Students will be asked to make predictions. Then they will create illustrations to tell the story in the computer lab. The illustrations will be displayed in the library. They will then choose and check out their library books.

Week #5: Students will listen to "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late" and "The Pigeon Finds A Hot Dog", by Mo Willems and "Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day", by Judith Viorst. They will then choose and check out their library books.

Week #6: Students will view the streamed video "Chrysanthemum", by Kevin Henkes. They will then choose and check out their library books.

Week #7: Students will listen to "If I Ran the Zoo", by Dr. Seuss and "Penny Lee and Her TV", by Glenn McCoy. They will then choose and check out their library books.

Student Assessment: Students will be assessed as they use prediction and sequencing.
