ELA-4-R-2 Students will recognize characteristics and elements of different kinds of works.

 

Core Content for Assessment

RD-E-1.0.7 Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and plays.

RD-E-1.0.8 Describe characters, plot, setting, and problem/solution of a passage.

Resources: Power Point about Poetry; Haiku video; What is Poetry video; Power Point about poetry; various poetry books 

Lesson Plan:  

    Week One: The Library Media Specialist will CHAMP all expectations for behavior in the Library Media Center. Students will view a video about poetry, watch a Power Point about poetry, listen to some poetry and read some poetry on their own.

    Week Two: Students will review what they have learned about poetry. They will be introduced to haiku. They will view a video about haiku, then talk about haiku. They will then view a video with nature images and music to get ideas about writing their own haiku. If there is time, they will begin writing their haiku poems.

    Week Three: Students will review what they have learned about poetry and haiku. They will watch the nature video and compose some poems. They will share poems with each other. They can illustrate their finished poem to be displayed. 

    Assessment: Students will be assessed on their participation and their completed poems.
