| Context: Students have been introduced to fairy tales, folk tales and Native American legends in the primary grades. This unit will build on and expand that knowledge. |
| Materials/Technology: Downloaded videos and various books of myths and legends. |
| Procedures:
Week 1: Students will review the CHAMP's expectations for the Library Media Center and be introduced to the Playaways and the fact that they can now check them out. They will then review the location of non-fiction, then view the downloaded video "Myths" (8:00) to introduce the unit. The Library Media Specialist will have a variety of materials on myths and legends from the 200 and 300 areas on display for checkout and students will check out a book for the first time. Week 2: Students will listen to the books "The Golem" by David Wisniewski (398.21 Wis) and "When Solomon was King", by Sheila MacGill-Callahan (398.22 Mac) and then choose books to check out. Week 3: Students will view the downloaded videos "Pandora's Box"(4:43) and "Daedalus and Icarus" (6:17) from ancient Greece and then choose books to check out. Week 4: Students will listen to the books "Savitri", by Aaron Shepard (294.5 She) and "The Hammer of Thunder", by Ann Pyk (293 Pyk) and then choose books to check out. Week 5: Students will view the downloaded videos "Perseus and Medusa" (3:53) and "Romulus and Remus" (6:54) from ancient Rome and then choose books to check out. Week 6: Students will listen to "Daughter of Earth", by Gerald McDermott (292 McD) and "Cyclops", by Leonard Fisher (398.21 Fis) from ancient Greece and Rome and then choose books to check out. |
| Student Assessment: Students will be assessed holistically by the Library Media Specialist as they select books from a variety of areas in the non-fiction section of the Library Media Center. |
