"Learning about the Newbery Medal"

Grade Level: 4th              

Objective:  4.14 Students will understand the origin of the Newbery Medal and read and appreciate books which have won the Medal.

Core Content for Assessment

  Resources: Power Point Presentation about the Newbery Medal; various Newbery Medal videos, including Misty, Old Yeller, My Side of the Mountain, The Summer of the Swans, Island of the Blue Dolphins and Incident at Hawk's Hill; the Newbery Bingo game from Highsmith

Lesson Plan:

  Week 1: Students will view the Power Point presentation and the Library Media Specialist will booktalk several Newbery books and have them on display for students to check out.

  Week 2:  Students will view 5 minute clips from the videos, Misty, Old Yeller and My Side of the Mountain, and various Newbery books will be on display for check out.

  Week 3: Students will view 5 minutes clips from the videos, The Summer of the Swans, Island of the Blue Dolphins and Incident at Hawk's Hill, and various Newbery books will be on display for check out.

Week 4: Students will listen to excerpts from several books which have won the Newbery Medal. 

  Week 5: Students will play Newbery Bingo from Highsmith and the prizes will be paperbacks which have won the Newbery Medal. 

  Assessment: Students will be assessed visually by the Library Media Specialist as they select  books which have won the Newbery Medal.
