"Learning about Mysteries"

Core Content for Assessment

RD-E-1.0.7 Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and plays.

RD-E-1.0.8 Describe characters, plot, setting, and problem/solution of a passage.

 

Resources: a streamed video to introduce the genre of Mysteries, "Mystery", from Pied Piper; the video mystery "Encyclopedia Brown One-Minute Mysteries" from Hi-Tops Video; the books "Stories to Solve" and "More Stories to Solve" both by George Shannon; and booktalks on mysteries

Lesson Plan:

Week 1: Students will be introduced to the genre of Mystery by viewing the streamed video "Mystery" from Pied Piper.  The Library Media Specialist will also have examples of mystery books on display to check out. 

Week 2: Students will view the video "Encyclopedia Brown One-Minute Mysteries", pausing it often to try to solve the mysteries. 

Week 3: Students will listen to "Stories to Solve" and "More Stories to Solve", then discuss and try to solve the mysteries..

Assessment: The Library Media Specialist will assess students holistically as they select a variety of genres from the fiction section.
