Program of Studies

ELA-5-R-4 Students will employ reading strategies to locate and apply ideas and information for inquiry projects and other authentic tasks.

Resources: Atlases, almanacs, encyclopedias (print and online), Internet search engines, the KYVL reference site.

Lesson Plan:

  Week 1: Students will be introduced to the concept of researching information by using print as well as non-print materials. The Library Media Specialist will show the students the Media Center web page and the search engines for students. Students will be encouraged to begin research with these, instead of using Google or other adult search engines. She will also show the students the online reference sources on the Media Center web page. She will talk about the importance of using reputable reference sources when doing research. Then, she will show them the online sources available from the KYVL and the print encyclopedias which are available in the Library Media Center.

Week 2: The Library Media Specialist will review the various places to locate information. Students will view the video, "The Animated Encyclopedia" and discuss how the encyclopedia can be used to locate information. Students will discuss the importance of using both print and non-print resources when doing research.

  Assessment: Students will be assessed holistically as they locate information, using a variety of sources.
