"Learning About Biographies"

 

Grade Level: 4th

Objective: 4.6 Students will define a biography as a true book about a person's life and know that biographies are arranged on the shelf in alphabetical order by the person's last name.

Core Content:

RD-04-2.0.1

Students will identify and describe the characteristics of fiction, nonfiction, poetry or plays.

RD-04-3.0.1

Students will explain a character’s or speaker’s actions based on a passage.

Resources:  downloaded biography videos, biography books,  and the Internet site Biographical Dictionary.

Lesson Plan:

    Week 1: Students will review the CHAMP's expectations for the Library Media Center, then discuss different genres of books, including biographies. Students will define biography, autobiography and locate them in the Library Media Center. Then students will check out books for the first time this year. The Library Media Specialist will have Biography books on display for students to examine and check out. 

    Week 2: Students will view the video "Literature for Children: Biographies" and review the information about biographies, the Library Media Specialist will have Biography books on display to check out, and students will check out books.   

    Week 3: The Library Media Specialist will read aloud "Snowflake Bentley", by Jaqueline Briggs Martin, review Biography information and students will check out.

    Week 4: Students will view the video "Ben Franklin, Part 1", discuss Colonial America and the individuals who lived during that time, review Biography information, and check out their books.

    Week 5: Students will view Part 2 of the Ben Franklin video and check out their books.

    Week 6: The Library Media Specialist will read aloud "The Librarian of Basra", by Jeanette Winter, review the Biography information to complete this unit and students will check out their books.

    Assessment: Students will be assessed visually as they locate biographies in the Library Media Center and orally by quizzing students as they check out books.
