| Context: Students have previously been introduced to non-fiction books in the primary grades and to the online catalog in the third grade. This unit will build on that knowledge. |

| Procedures:
Week 1: Students will be introduced to the topic of the Dewey Decimal System and Ancient Egypt by viewing the beginning of a Power Point presentation. The Library Media Specialist will explain that Ancient Egypt is a topic that can be found in almost all the areas of the Dewey Decimal System, because there are so many different subjects. Students will view the web site "Do We Really Know Dewey" on the Power Point slide. They will then view the introduction to Ancient Egypt video on the next slide. Week 2: Students will review the Dewey Decimal System and the Power Point slides they have seen. They will review myths and view the Power Point slides about creation myths and talk about the 200's and 300's. Then they will view the folk tale "Strega Nona" on the next slide. Week 4: Students will review the 200's and 300's, then listen to the Egyptian fairy tale, "The Egyptian Cinderella" by Shirley Climo from the 398 section. The Library Media Specialist will have books from those areas on display to check out. Week 5: Students will review what they have learned and then view a video clip from the Power Point about hieroglyphics. The librarian will talk about the books that can be found in the 400's. Then they will view a clip about the Nile River and talk about the 500 section. Week 6: Students will review what they have learned, review the 500's, then listen to "Falcons Nest in Skyscrapers", by Priscilla Jenkins (598.9) and talk about how the Ancient Egyptians used falcons to hunt for them. Week 7: Students will view video clips about papermaking, the pyramids and mummies on the Power Point presentation to learn about the 600's, 700's and 900's. Week 8: Students will listen to the book "Mummies", by Edith Kunhardt (932 Kun) and review their study of the Dewey Decimal System. |
| Student Assessment: Students will be assessed visually as they use the online catalog to select books and choose books in the non-fiction section. |
