This is a list of Library Information Skills which are taught at Dixie Elementary Magnet School. If the skills are underlined like hypertext, there is a corresponding lesson plan you can link to. Click on the grade level to go to the skills for that level.

Students will:
1. understand that the Library Media Center is divided into several categories, including picture books, fiction, non-fiction, reference, paperbacks and periodicals.
Learning about Myths, Legends and Epics
2. understand that fiction is made up of many genres and name two of these genres.
Learning about Science Fiction Books
3. use a variety of reference materials, including atlases, almanacs and encyclopedias - both print and online - to locate information.
a. define volumes, index and guide words in an encyclopedia.
b. define an atlas as a book of maps and be able to use a print or online version to locate information.
c. define an almanac as a book of lists and facts and be able to use a print or online version to locate information.
Using a Variety of Materials for a Research Project
4. write a bibliography with the correct annotations.
5. define all the parts of a book, including author, title, illustrator, illustrations, cover, spine, title page, table of contents, glossary, index, publisher, place of publication, copyright date, appendix, bibliography, forward and preface.
6. locate the biography section of the library media center and understand it is part of non-fiction.
7. develop an understanding of the need to make responsible choices to ensure personal safety, computer safety and responsible use of web sites when using the Internet.
8. recognize that there are a variety of authors and be able to select reading materials by a variety of authors.
9.recognize that non-fiction books are arranged in Dewey Decimal order and explain the origin of this numbering system.
Learning about the Dewey Decimal System
10. locate books on the shelf using the Dewey Decimal system.
11. understand that authors are an important part of Kentucky history and life.
12. explain how books are made and a brief history of books.
13. define Destiny as the on-line public access catalog and use it to locate materials by subject, author, title and keyword.
14. understand the origin of the Newbery Medal and read and appreciate books which have won the Medal.
15. Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and plays.

Students will:
1. use a variety of criteria, such as children's book awards, to select fiction books by many different authors.
2. understand that fiction is made up of many different genres and choose a variety of books to read from the different genres.
Learning About Realistic Fiction
3. understand the origin of the Newbery Medal and read and appreciate books which have won the Medal.
4. use a variety of sources (print, electronic and Internet) to research information on a topic.
5. locate and use all reference materials, including encyclopedias (print, cd and Internet), dictionaries, thesauruses, atlases, almanacs and other reference books to locate information.
6. paraphrase information from reference materials for research projects.
7. present research projects in a variety of formats, i.e., written papers, Power Point presentations, oral reports, etc.
8. develop an understanding of the need to make responsible choices to ensure personal safety, computer safety and responsible use of web sites when using the Internet.
9. define a bibliography as a list of sources used and interpret information they have listed in a bibliography.
10. locate materials in the Library Media Center using Destiny.
First Visit to the Library Media Center
11. define a biography as a true book about a person's life and know that biographies are arranged in alphabetical order by the person' last name.
