"Classic Picture Books"

Grade Level: Kindergarten          

Objectives: K.4. Students will select a variety of picture books for pleasure reading, including classic picture books.

Resources: various classic picture books and videos

   Lesson Plan:  

    Week One: Students will be introduced to the concept of "classic" picture books which have been around for years because they are excellent literature. Students will be introduced to Corduroy and view the video "Corduroy". Students will then check out their library books.

Students will understand that different purposes to read include reading to acquire new information and reading for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are plays, fiction and non-fiction, classic and contemporary works.

    Week Two: Students will review "classic" picture books and listen to "The Story About Ping", by Marjorie Flack  and "The  Cat in the Hat", by Dr. Seuss.

Students will describe characters, plot, setting or problem/solution of a passage.  

    Week Three: Students will review the author Dr. Seuss and view the video "Horton Hatches the Egg."

Students will describe characters, plot, setting or problem/solution of a passage.  

Week Four: Students will be introduced to Lyle, the crocodile and listen to "Lyle at the Office" and "Funny, Funny Lyle", by Bernard Waber.

    Week Five: Students will review Lyle and view the video "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile".

      Week Six: Students will view the video "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel".

Core Content:

Students will identify main ideas or details that support them.

       Week Seven: Students will be introduced to Madeline and listen to "Madeline" and "Madeline's Rescue", by Ludwig Bemelmans. They will finish this unit by reviewing the concept of "classic" books.

Assessment: Students will be assessed holistically on their knowledge as they choose library books to check out.
