"Learning about Insects"

Grade Level: Kindergarten          

Objectives:  K.5 will locate the non-fiction section in the Library Media Center.

Resources:  Books and videos about insects, a web site about Insects.

Lesson Plan:

Week 1: Students will be introduced to the concept of non-fiction books and will be shown the non-fiction section of the Library Media Center.  Non-fiction will be available for them to check out on tables. Students will view the Reading Rainbow video, Bugs,  to introduce the unit on insects. Pages from an insect mural will be available for students to color.The Library Media Specialist will have a variety of non-fiction books available on the tables for students to check out. 

Week 2: Students will listen to Insects are my Life, by Megan McDonald and be shown photographs and information from Extremely Weird Insects (595.7 Lov).  Insect coloring pages will be available for students to color and place on the mural. The Library Media Specialist will have a variety of non-fiction books available on the tables for students to check out. 

Week 3: Students will listen to Are you a Butterfly?, by Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries (595.78 All) and Are You a Ladybug? by Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries (595.76 All). Insect activity sheets will be available for students. Coloring sheets about insects to place on the mural will be available for students to color. The Library Media Specialist will have a variety of non-fiction books available on the tables for students to check out. 

Week 4: Students will be shown photographs and information from Insects, Our Living World, by Jenny Tesar (595.7 Tes) and listen to Are You a Dragonfly?, by Judy Allen and Tudor Humphries (595.7 All). The Library Media Specialist will have a variety of non-fiction books available on the tables for students to check out.     

Week 5: Students will listen to excerpts from The Big Bug Book, by Margery Facklam (595.7Fac).  The Library Media Specialist will have a variety of non-fiction books available on the tables for students to check out. 

Assessment: The Library Media Specialist will visually assess students as they select and discuss non-fiction books.
