"Using Wordless Picture Books"

Grade Level: Preschool/Early Start

Objective: E7. appreciate picture books without words and learn to tell the story from the illustrations.

Resources: various books and streamed videos

Lesson Plan:

Week 1: Students will be introduced to the concept that they can tell as story by looking at the illustrations in a book. Library Media Specialist will read "Clean Your Room, Harvey Moon", by Pat Cummings and tell students to look at the illustrations carefully. Then, she will read "Good Night Gorilla", Peggy Rathman and allow the students to tell the story aloud. Students will then view the streamed video "Angus Lost", by Marjorie Flack.

Week 2: Students will review the concept about telling stories using illustrations. Then they will listen to "The Hat", by Jan Brett and "Have You Seen my Cat?", by Eric Carle. They will tell the story to the second book. Then, they will view the streamed video "Caterpillar and the Polliwog", by Jack Kent.  

Week 3: Students will listen to "The Hidden Forest", by Jeannie Baker and "The Red Book", by Barbara Lehman. They will tell the story to the second book. Then, they will view the streamed video "Danny and the Dinosaur", by Syd Hoff  

Week 4: Students will listen to "Mucky Pup", by Ken Brown and "Have You Seen My Duckling", by Nancy Tafuri. They will tell the story to the second book. Then, they will view the streamed video "Each Peach Pear Plum", by Allan Ahlberg.  

Week 5:  Students will listen to "Little Cloud", by Eric Carle and "Carl Goes Shopping", by Alexandra Day. They will tell the story to the second book. Then, they will view the streamed video "Harold and the Purple Crayon", by Crockett Johnson. 

 

Assessment: Students will be assessed visually by the Library Media Specialist as they listen to a variety of stories.
