Primary Skills
This is a list of Library Information Skills which are taught at Dixie Elementary Magnet School. If the skills are underlined like hypertext, there is a corresponding lesson plan you can link to. Click on the grade level to go to the skills for that level.
Early Start Kindergarten First Grade Second Grade Third Grade

Students will:
1. recognize and appreciate all Library Media Center rules.
2. understand the basic concepts of book care.
3. locate picture books in the Library Media Center.
4. know that a variety of materials are found in the Library Media Center, including many different kinds of books, audiovisual materials and periodicals.
5. understand that there are many different characters in books (Curious George, Lyle the Crocodile, Corduroy and Madeline) and will name two book characters.
6. understand there are many different ways to tell a story, including flannel board stories, cutout stories, drawn stories and stories told using props, like dolls and puppets.
7. appreciate picture books without words and learn to tell the story from the illustrations.

Students will:
1. recognize and appreciate the importance of all the rules for behavior in the Library Media Center.

3. choose books in the picture book corner and replace the book on the shelf in the correct place with the spine facing out.
4. select a variety of picture books for pleasure reading, including classic picture books.

Reading Non-Fiction Books To Learn About Different Organisms
6. select non-fiction books for a variety of purposes.
7. understand that there are a variety of types of illustrations in books and develop an appreciation for them.
8. identify these book terms: spine, cover, title, author, illustrator/characters, setting, problem/solution/plot.
Learning About Classic Fairy Tales
9. develop an appreciation for authors and select books to check out by certain authors.
10. develop an appreciation for illustrators and select books to check out by certain illustrators.
11. understand that you can participate in a variety of activities in the Library Media Center.
12. evaluate and select appropriate materials to purchase at the school Book Fair

Students will:
1. recognize and appreciate all the rules in the Library Media Center.

10. locate the fiction section in the library and select books from this area.

Students will:

3. will understand that fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order on the shelf by the author's last name and will select books using this arrangement.
4. use a table of contents to locate a chapter and explain what information will be found in that chapter.
5. choose and appreciate books which have several chapters and a table of contents.
6. understand that non-fiction books are arranged in a number order and will select books from this area for a variety of purposes.
Learning About Non-Fiction Informational Books
7. appreciate a wide variety of fairy and folk tales from many different countries.
8. locate fairy tale and folk tales in the 398 section of the Library Media Center and select them for pleasure reading.
9. locate Native American legends in the 398 non-fiction section of the Library Media Center.

10. recognize and appreciate books which have won the Caldecott Medal: be able to explain how the Caldecott Medal was named for Randolph Caldecott and name at least two books that have won the Caldecott Medal.

12. understand that non-fiction books are arranged in a number order.
