"Learning about Native American Legends"

Grade Level: Second               

Objective: 

2.9. Students will locate Native American legends in the 398 non-fiction section of the Library Media Center.

Students will understand that reading a wide range of literature by different authors, and from many time periods, cultures, and genres, builds an understanding of the extent of human experience.

Resources: Various books and a web site about Native Americans, I Can Statement.

  Lesson Plan:

  Week 1: Students will review the location and arrangement of the non-fiction section of the library, specifically the 398 section.  They will listen to "The Very First Americans", by Cara Ashrose and discuss how there were many Native American tribes and each had their own legends.

  Week 2: Students will view the streamed videos "Pelican Girl" and "The Boy Who Loved Bears".

Week 3:  Students will listen to  "Coyote Places the Stars", by Harriet Peck Taylor and "Her Seven Brothers", by Paul Goble.

Week 4: Students will listen to "The Eye of the Needle", by Teri Sloat and "Arrow to the Sun", by Gerald McDermott.

  Week 5: Students will view the streamed videos "The Storytelling Stone" and "Turkey Girl".

  Week 6: Students will listen to "Adopted by Eagles", by Paul Goble and "Zinnia, How the Corn Was Saved", by Patricia  Powell.

  Assessment: Students will be assessed visually by the Library Media Specialist as they choose and check out books from the non-fiction section, specifically the 398 section.
