"Laughing With Humorous Books"

Grade Level: 3rd

Objective: Students will recognize various genres of fiction books.

Library Information Skills: 3.3. Students will recognize various genres of fiction books and choose and appreciate books from a variety of genres.

Students will understand that different purposes to read include reading to acquire new information and reading for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are plays, fiction and non-fiction, classic and contemporary works.

I can statements:

I can recognize many different genres in the fiction section of the Library Media Center.

I can understand that there are many different purposes for reading, including reading for fun.

Context: Students have previously been introduced to books written by Beverly Cleary. This unit will expand on that knowledge by introducing other authors of humorous books.
Materials/Technology: various humorous books and movies
Procedures:

    Week 1: Students will be introduced to humorous books by viewing a downloaded video, then check out their library books. The Library Media Specialist will have humorous books on display to check out.

    Week 2: Students will listen to excerpts from some humorous books, then check out their library books.

    Week 3: Students will watch the downloaded video "Problem Solving with Humorous Books", then check out their library books.

    Week 4: Students will listen to excerpts from some humorous books, then check out their library books.

    Week 5: Book Fair

    Week 6: Book Exchange.

 

Student Assessment: Students will be assessed holistically as they choose a variety of books to check out.
