"Folk Tales from Africa"

Grade Level: Third

  Objectives: 3.8: Students will locate folk and fairy tales in the 398 section of the Library Media Center and select them for pleasure reading.

Core Content:

AH-EP-2.3.1

Students will identify folktales, legends or myths from the following cultures and periods.

Cultures:

Native American,

Traditional Appalachian

West African

Resources: various African folk tale books, the video from Live Oak Media, Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock, the video from Live Oak Media, Anansi Goes Fishing, African folk tale downloaded videos: "How Anansi Obtained the Sky God's Stories"; and "Talk"

Lesson Plan:

Week #1: Students will discuss the location of the non-fiction section of the library, specifically the 398 section where they can locate folk tales, fairy tales, myths and legends. They will discuss the fact that many different cultures have folk tales and that they will be learning about folk tales from West Africa. The Library Media Specialist will show them:

A Map of the World
A Map of Africa
and A Map of West Africa

then they will view the downloaded video Anansi's Rescue From the River.  The Library Media Specialist will have folk tale books on display and students will be encouraged to choose one or to browse in the 398 section.

Week #2: Students will review the information about the non-fiction section and West African folk tales and listen to "Half a Ball of Kenki", by Verna Aardema, then choose books to check out.

Week #3: Students will view the video "Anansi Goes Fishing" retold by Eric A. Kimmel and choose their library books to check out.

Week #4: Students will listen to "Mufaro and His Beautiful Daughters", by John Steptoe and choose their library books to check out.

Week #5: Students will view the videos "How Anansi Obtained the Sky God's Stories" and "Talk" and choose their library books to check out.

Week #6: Student will review the information about the non-fiction section and will listen to "A Story, A Story", by Gail Haley and choose their library books to check out.

Assessment: Students will be assessed visually as the choose a variety of folk tales from the 398 section of the Library Media Center.
